Programs and Services

The MWG offers a variety of programs and services for writers and readers in Manitoba. Many of these programs, such as our workshops and reading series, are open to non-members as well.

If you’re looking for information on calls for submission, local readings, writing groups, workshops, writers’ retreats and residencies, as well as local and international writing news, our bi-weekly newsletter is a great resource, full of useful information.

If you’re a developing writer who is also a MWG member and are looking to hone your craft with a professional, you may be interested in the Sheldon Oberman Mentorship Program, a 5-month intensive one-on-one training program with a professional writer in which you will be able to develop your writing project.

Whether you’re a beginning or established writer, we have workshops tailored to varied skill levels. From our Blue Pencil Sessions, free to members and designed for emerging writers, to our intensive day-long masterclasses, which are designed for published writers and are conducted by some of the finest writers in Canada.

Are you a writing or publishing professional who is available to provide manuscript evaluations?  Are you a beginner or emerging writer who is looking for some feedback on your writing?  The Guild is reviving our manuscript evaluation service.
Member evaluators:
We’ll maintain a list of people who are available for manuscript evaluations and would like to make their contact information available to those who are seeking evaluations.  Please submit an email including your name, brief outline of professional qualifications, genres of focus, and preferred method of contact to:, with “evaluator submission” in the subject heading.  Please also submit a Member Profile and indicate that you are available for manuscript evaluations in the designated field.  Evaluators must have at least two books published, and experience in teaching, editing, and/or manuscript evaluating is essential.

Members seeking evaluations:
Please send an email briefly outlining the project you’d like feedback on, up to three questions about the writing you are submitting for evaluation, and your preferred method of contact to, with “seeking evaluation” in the subject heading.  We will put you in touch with an evaluator.
If you would prefer to find a manuscript evaluator on your own, the new Members Profiles section has a field indicating whether a member is available for evaluations.  You can browse the profiles and select an evaluator on your own.

Please note that manuscript evaluations are not detailed edits, but a service where the evaluator provides general comments on content and technique, as well as some suggestions on the development of the manuscript.  Suggested Pricing:  Final pricing is to be decided between the evaluator and the writer seeking an evaluation.  However, some basic guidelines are: $50-75 for prose up to 3000 words, $50-125 for poetry up to 24 pages. (Again, please note that this fee is for a general evaluation, not a detailed edit).
The above are suggested guidelines.  Final arrangements are to be agreed upon by the parties involved.  The MWG does not make any guarantees about the manuscript evaluation service, including future publication of the manuscript submitted.
